Rain Barrels: An Environmentally-friendly Budget Saver

Rain barrels have been a mainstay for eco-friendly homeowners for decades but have recently experienced an upsurge in popularity among the everyday consumer.  With rising utility costs and efforts by municipalities to limit water consumption, many are looking for ways to keep their landscaping looking healthy using a plentiful (and free) resource – rainwater.  Rain barrels offer a way to easily collect this water storing it for use whenever the need arises.

A Cleve Storage Solution
For over 3,000 years the human race has been on the hunt for smart ways to catch and use rainwater. From cisterns to reservoirs, we have crafted some amazing inventions to store one of Mother Nature’s most bountiful resources.   One of the best examples of clever, simple water storage is the rain barrel. So how much water can one of these save you?  The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates gardeners using a rain barrel save about 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months. This could translate to huge cost savings for your customers!

Rain Barrel Features & OptionsMany envision a rain barrel as a bright blue eyesore in the backyard but don’t be fooled!  With their rise in popularity, they now come in many colors, finishes, and styles sure to match a number of aesthetics. These storage tanks also offer features that make them even easier for the average homeowner to use.

Flat Backs – Some homeowners prefer that the barrel sits flush against the home or garage. While the term “barrel” typically refers to a cylindrical device, many of these storage containers have flat backs making them less intrusive in the backyard.

Spigots – Brass spigots make it simple to attach a garden hose and access the water.  Spigots should be located above the bottom of the unit to prevent sediment from clogging it.

Screened Intakes – Keeping insets and bugs out of the barrel, most models feature a screened intake. This helps keep your water clean and prevents buildup from clogging the spigot.

One Piece Closed Design – Because of how and where they are stored, barrels can be accessed by all sorts of roaming critters. Manufacturers have responded to customer concerns by offering a one-piece closed design on most models.  This construction prevents children, pets, and wildlife from entering the barrel.

Plastic vs. Wood                                                                                                                          Rain Barrels carry heavy loads of water and need to be portable. For this reason, they are typically constructed of either plastic or wood. You will not find them in brick, stone, or concrete.  While using reclaimed wood to construct a barrel is increasingly popular, many find plastic as a better fit for their lifestyle. Not only is plastic easy to maintain and highly durable, it is also inexpensive and lightweight.   Since many like the look of wood without the high price tag, manufacturers are now offering plastic barrels with faux wood finishes as well.

Before summer comes and goes, consider adding a rain barrel to your customer’s backyard renovation plan. They are a simple way to add function to the home while saving money at the same time.
